GreekBoston.com is a website dedicated to Greeks in Boston. Mythology in Greece Erato – Greek Mythological Muse of Love Poetry | Comments Off on Erato – Greek Mythological Muse of Love Poetry The Nine Muses are considered to be responsible for all forms of creative and intellectual thought in Ancient Greece, according to Greek mythology. They have been mentioned in the literature of various people throughout history, including Heisod and Diodorus Siculus. The Romans embraced the story of the muses after adopting components of Greek mythology.

Erato was the ancient muse of love poetry and songs, as well as poetry and songs about marriage, and each of the muses was responsible for one component of creative or intellectual thought. Here's a little more about who this muse is and what she represents:

Erato's Basic Information

Erato, like the other eight muses, is supposed to be Zeus' and Mnemosyne's daughters. According to tradition, Zeus and the titaness slept together for nine days, each of which resulted in the birth of one of the muses. Her name implies "desired" or "beautiful," as indicated by the way she is typically depicted. She is frequently depicted with a garland composed of myrtle and roses and is said to be both passionate and seductive. She is also rarely photographed standing up, preferring to be seated. Erato, like the other muses, is pictured as a young and lovely lady whose very presence inspires love poetry.

Literature Evidence of Erato

Erato has been mentioned in a number of works of literature. In his work Argonautica, Appolonius of Rhodes mentions that it could be derived from the same root. Appolonius was the one who proposed that Erato's name was derived from the same root as Eros, and he also said that she possessed Aphrodite's grace. Turtle doves are always at her feet, nibbling seeds, according to Simon Vouet's works. One of the worldwide symbols of love is the turtle dove. Eros, the god of love, is frequently depicted as following her in Vouet's work.

Along with the other eight muses, Hesiod mentions her in his Theogony work. She was also mentioned in one of his lost poems, Rhadine, which was quoted by the writer Strabo in one of his works. In his work Phaedrus, Plato also associated her with feelings of love. In Virgil's Aeneid, she is referenced briefly.

Erato is one of the nine muses, and she usually represents all love-related compositions, such as love poems, love ballads, and other issues involving love and marriage. She is also supposed to be one of the most attractive of all the muses because of what she represents, especially because it is said that her very beauty encourages these thoughts. In other words, Erato was generally present anytime ancient Greek writers and poets intended to convey love.

Description

This etching is part of the Apollo and the Muses Tarocchi series, which is identified by the letter "D." The nine Muses (Callipe, Urania, Terpsichore, Erato, Polyhymnia, Thalia, Melpomene, Euterpe, and Clio) were the daughters of Zeus, the god-king, and Mnemosyne, the Titaness of Memory, according to Greek mythology. The Muses were deities who presided over several fields of art and science. Apollo, the god of light, music, prophecy, and poetry, was their leader and overseer.

Erato is depicted here as a full-length female figure in profile to the right, placed in a fantasy environment. Her dance-like posture and the tambourine she wields hint she is the dance's Muse. Erato was also known as the lyric and love poetry Muse.
